Storms of Anaias

About the Project

In 1987, FTL Games released an RPG title for the Atari ST called Dungeon Master, which would essentially define the genre of games known as dungeon crawlers, alongside other titles like Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Hack and Bloodwych. In 1989, FTL Games released a subsequent expansion for the game, titled Chaos Strikes Back. Both of these titles featured unique attributes of gameplay and detailed narratives included with their respective user manuals.

Storms of Anaias and its related books are a tribute to those titles, the camaraderie between players sitting in the same room at one or more computers, the many hours of determined struggle to overcome the presented challenges, and the fond memories. While the original games did not provide the depth of the world I have created in these books, their service as a source of inspiration cannot be overstated. While these books will remain a continual work-in-progress, I hope that you find exciting new adventures in these pages.

Why Dungeons & Dragons?

Dungeons & Dragons provides a rich ecosystem of flexible rules, diverse options for characters and adventures, and a community with several decades of following and fellowship. It's hard for me to imagine a more fitting landscape in which to frame the world of Anaias, especially since playing Dungeon Master and watching the Saturday morning cartoon of the same name is what led to my interest in playing the game. Many of the story elements from Dungeon Master is plainly rooted in Dungeons & Dragons and the works of Tolkien.

What's the overall goal for this project?

I want to bring the story of Anaias to the modern gaming world so that others might share in its adventure and joy. I will continue to enrich the setting, as time permits, and make it available to you for free.

Where can I learn more about Dungeon Master or Chaos Strikes Back?

Wikipedia has good overviews on both Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back. Several sites have deconstructed the series for both theme and technical details. I would also recommend having a look at the overviews for Bloodwych and Dungeon Hack to get a more complete idea of how this unique genre of video game came to be.
